Peeps, if you get the chance to ever attend a Breathless Reads Tour YOU SHOULD GO! Seriously there is nothing more kick ass than young adult authors.
From the left: Me, Andrea Cremer, Jamie, Jessica Spotswood, Beth Revis, April from Sim-Sational Books, Marie Lu, Jena from Shortie Says
By hook or by crook, YOU SHOULD GO. I know, I get a little repetitive with that. On February 18th, I kidnapped my little sister and drove the four hours to Collegeville, PA just to go to this book signing. Interesting things we saw along the way: The Great Wall of PA Turnpike, Pay-to-Potty, the most sketchy gas station in Upstate NY, and an abandoned shopping plaza.
Upon arriving at the Towne Bookstore, I immediately spotted Jamie from the Perpetual Page Turner and ran over to say HEYYYYY GIRL! AND OMG sitting in front of her was April from Sim-Sational Books and it was so FREAKIN AWESOME to meet her for the very first time EVAR and you guys it was her very first book signing and SHE IS SO COOL. And then I also got to meet Jena from Shortie-Says who is so ridiculously adorable and pretty you guys have no idea. After introductions and chatting we had to sit down and listen to this moderator and the authors. You guys I totally TOOK NOTES so I could report back to you, but I didn’t write everything down because partway through I got really REALLY hungry and started thinking about food and zoning out.
BUT HERE ARE COOL THINGS I LEARNED AND NOW YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT THE BREATHLESS AUTHORS:
Andrea Cremer read a lot of David Eddings and JRR Tolkien as a kid. Awesome taste yo.
Jessica Spotswood based her book, Born Wicked, on the concept of strong independent girls in a society that doesn’t value them.
Beth Revis loves books with a fantastical setting, but felt a sci-fi setting was the best way to tell her story.
Marie Lu grew up reading fantasy and sci-fi, because she is totally cool. She always wanted to write about a teenage criminal who was a good guy, much like Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.
According to Beth Revis, truckers really like her sci-fi book, as she discovered after the audiobook of Across The Universe was on the books channel on XM radio. (Sidebar: I have XM, um yo HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY BROADCAST AUDIOBOOKS).
80% of Andrea Creamer’s readers are girls. She really loves writing the sexy times and fighting scenes.
Marie Lu totally got some bonus points because she said she was obsessed with Game Of Thrones and really liked Ready Player One.
Beth Revis is into Castle and Firefly and Dr. Who. (Sidebar: I wonder if she is a Nathan Fillion fan?)
Jessica Spotswood showed that SHE TOO has taste as she enjoys Downton Abbey, Revenge, and the Graceling series.
Andrea Cremer loves Buffy and is a total Joss Whedon fan girl.
Andrea Creamer said her story is done before the fans see it. She said the characters believe they are real and that she cried while writing her book.
Jessica Spotswood is focused on the characters and what they want and what is stopping them from what they want. She mentioned honesty and consequences.
Beth Revis pretty much won the panel by saying that she laughs wickedly after killing her characters.
Marie Lu tries to read reviews every now and then to see what readers are thinking. She also likes getting to know other writers and finds social media is great in reaching out to other writers and getting advice from other writers.
OH and also ahhhh, Beth Revis mentioned that her next project is going to be The Birds meets Game Of Thrones, and you guys I literally wrote in my notes for this ‘OH FUCK YES!!”
And now, since you’ve read like 600 words of me rambling about Breathless Reads Tour, I have a reward for one lucky reader.
A signed paperback of Across The Universe by Beth Revis
and an unsigned ARC (because I suck and forgot to bring it) of Legend by Marie Lu
Just leave a comment and I will randomly choose a winner on March 12 and announce them on this post. And no you do not have to come back to the post to look. I will email you. This is open internationally because I love my international readers TOO.
