Why I Am Team Unicorn: Guest Post by Shanyn at ChickLovesLit

Shanyn at ChickLovesLit was my BEA roomie. She is incredibly awesome and put up with me for like 4 days. Not an easy task. She reads a ton of YA and also has her husband do reviews every once in awhile. I kind of want to steal tips from her on how to get your lover to read YA. Without furhur ado:

Team Unicorn FTW

I happy to be here to celebrate Zombies vs. Unicorns week with April!
Legend has it that unicorns would pierce a liar through the heart if the liar were to approach them. Interesting legend! I have decided to discuss a few literary individuals that may choose Team Zombie over Team Unicorn because of this possible complication.

James Frey – author of A Million Little Pieces

Frey wrote A Million Little Pieces and claimed it was an autobiography of his time with drugs and alcohol. After Oprah selected it as a book club book, it became a bestseller – only to be revealed later that some of the events were made up. Which doesn’t exactly make it an autobiography anymore.

Janet Cooke – Washington Post Journalist

After writing a story about an 8-year-old heroin addict (‘Jimmy’s World’), Cooke won a Pulitzer Prize. It was soon discovered that Cooke had made the entire story up – she returned her Pulitzer and retired.

Stephen Glass – Reporter, The New Republic

Famous for lying in his reports, Glass went so far as to make up fake websites to back up his ‘sources.’ He moved up to associate editor before being exposed. After leaving The New Republic, Glass attended law school and is now working at a law firm.

Cast of Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

This television series has just started, but the books have been out for awhile – the four girls that star in this series are all keeping secrets from each other and their friends and family.
I’m not saying that all individuals on Team Zombie are liars, but it certainly seems safer for those listed above to join that team rather than risk being pierced through the heart.

If you’re still undecided about your Team, I urge you to consider who you would rather hang out with – April, me, and the rest of our Team, or James Frey and Stephen Glass, known liars. Seems like an easy decision to me!

(Disclaimer: This post was written for fun. Individuals discussed are free to choose their own side, and I will not think you are a liar if you choose Team Zombie… though I may like you a little less.)

  1. Haha love the disclaimer – totally choose your own team, but if you choose wrong you're an idiot 😉

By the way did you know that a group of poines is called a marmalade and a group of zebras is called a dazzle? What do you think a group of unicorns is called? (personal vote: an exploding rainbow of unicorns)

This was awesome, great guest post! I don't know much about unicorns but I've just about finished Rampant and i'm dying to know more. Interesting idea that unicorns know liars right away. I would also add Mark Kirk and Tiger Woods 😉

BTW, April I gave you an award http://blackteensread2.blogspot.com/2010/06/waiting-on-wednesday-what-momma-left-me.html
